Which Shop Platforms Can a Competitor Price Tracker Read? What We Found Reading 85 Shops
We read 85 online shops on 20 platforms, from Shopify and WooCommerce to Shopware, JTL and Gambio, and checked the prices. What read, what did not, what to ask.
A competitor price tracker can read shops on most European shop platforms, but not every shop on them. In October 2026 we read 85 online shops on 20 platforms with VantageDash, from Shopify and WooCommerce to Shopware, JTL, Gambio, Shoptet and DanDomain, and checked the prices we read against each shop's own page. Shops on all 20 platforms read, and every price we checked matched the price on the shop's page. What stops a tracker is rarely the platform. It is a shop that blocks visitors it takes for a robot, a shop that does not answer, or a shop that shows no prices in public.
The rest of this post is what we read, what we could not, and what to ask any price tracker before you rely on it.
Why We Measured Instead of Saying "Any Store"
"Works with any store" is easy to write and hard to check. For a shop selling bicycle parts in Germany, building supplies in Denmark or catering equipment in Italy, the question is narrower: can the tracker read the shops my competitors actually run, on the platforms they actually use?
A lot of European specialist shops do not run on Shopify. They run on Shopware, JTL or Gambio in Germany, Shoptet in the Czech Republic, Shoper in Poland, DanDomain in Denmark, EKM in the UK, or on a shop someone built for them. Each of these lists its products and shows its prices in its own way, so a tracker that reads Shopify well can still read nothing from a Gambio shop. The only way to know is to read real shops on each platform and look at what comes back.
How We Read the 85 Shops
- Real shops, chosen by platform. Four shops on most platforms, a few more on Shopify and WooCommerce, most of them in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland, and some in the US.
- The same reader our merchants get. Each shop was read from our own server with the code merchants use, gently: one page every two seconds, and nothing kept afterwards.
- Prices checked against the shop. For each shop that read, we took a few products and compared the price we read with the price the shop's own product page shows.
- Readable means something came back. A shop counted as read when one read gave at least one product with a price, and no error.
The Platforms Where the Shops We Tried Read
- The big international platforms: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace and Ecwid.
- The platforms German-speaking shops run on: Shopware 6, JTL, Gambio, plentymarkets and ePages.
- Platforms elsewhere in Europe: PrestaShop, Magento 2, OpenCart, Lightspeed, Shoptet, Shoper, DanDomain and EKM.
- Custom-built shops: the ones that answered us read too.
Not every shop read on the first try. Several of the less common platforms, Gambio, ePages, DanDomain and Shoptet among them, list their products in a way our reader did not yet follow, and one shop fills in its prices with its own script after the page loads. Those were gaps in our reader, not walls the shops put up, and we closed them over the following days. That is the reason to measure: a tracker that has never read a Gambio shop cannot know whether it can.
What We Cannot Read
This is as of 27 October 2026.
- A shop that blocks robots on every page. Some shops put a bot check in front of every page. For a competitor's shop, VantageDash reads those through a paid service: the first read of a shop you add on any plan, the free one included, and every later check on a paid plan. Each read takes a limited number of pages, so a competitor's product list fills in over several checks rather than in one. One competitor of one of our merchants turns away even that service on its product pages, and we cannot read it today.
- A shop that does not answer. One shop in our test did not answer our server at all, on two separate days. Nothing reads a shop that does not answer.
- A shop with no public prices. Some shops, often wholesalers, show prices only after you log in. VantageDash reads what any visitor sees and does not log in to a competitor's shop, so it cannot read those prices.
- Marketplaces. VantageDash does not read Amazon or eBay. It reads the online shops your competitors run themselves.
- Prices with and without VAT side by side. VantageDash keeps each price as the shop shows it. It does not add or remove VAT, so if your shop shows prices without VAT and a competitor's shows them with it, the two are not on the same basis.
Large shops take longer, too. A first read takes part of a big catalogue, and each later check reads another part and adds it.
What to Ask Any Price Tracker, Ours Included
Where VantageDash Fits
VantageDash reads your competitors' own online stores on the platforms above. For each of your products it finds the same product where a competitor sells it and the closest comparable one where they don't, and labels every match as one or the other. A comparable product waits for you to approve it, and where the pack sizes differ it compares the price per item. It sends an alert when a competitor changes a price you track, and it never changes your prices. Where a shop cannot be read, you can add the products you care about by hand on any plan. It is free for 3 competitors and 50 products, and AI matching starts on the $19 plan. See the plans.
